Back pain in the morning or numb hands at night
According to research, when choosing a bed or mattress, Finns carefully consider the mattress’s impact on back health. And rightly so—an unsuitable mattress can cause or worsen back pain. But a good bed should do more than just fight back pain: it should act as a bio-recharging station, giving a person the energy for their day and laying the foundation for healthy enthusiasm and interest in daily tasks.
“The fact is that we spend about one-third of our lives in bed. Recovery happens mainly through sleep, and a high-quality, individually chosen sleeping surface grounds our restorative sleep,” says Minna Aulavuo, a certified sleep ergonomics specialist at the Tempur Brand Store in Helsinki Outlet.
“It’s known that poor sleeping posture causes stiffness and pain in the back, which decreases our ability to function. Stiffness and pain that are more intense in the morning and ease throughout the day are usually signs of poor sleeping posture during the night,” Aulavuo adds.
Check whether your mattress meets these essential criteria for a good mattress:
- The mattress reduces pressure on the body, allowing surface blood circulation to flow as freely as possible. “This means less sleep-disturbing movement during the night and fewer awakenings caused by it. If the surface pressure from the mattress becomes too high, we instinctively change positions due to discomfort to avoid depriving tissues of oxygen. Pressure often leads to pain and even numbness.”
- The mattress conforms as closely as possible to the body's shape. “It should yield beneath the body's 'protrusions,' such as the hips and shoulders. The mattress also needs to be thick enough to allow proper sinking of the body.”
- It simultaneously supports the body in a physiologically correct position. “For example, in a side-sleeping position, as the shoulder and hip sink in, the waist needs support so that a good spinal posture can be maintained.”
- The mattress and mattress topper are made of breathable materials. “This allows moisture and heat that interfere with sleep to evaporate. Moisture can also weaken the support properties of the materials.”
Trust a Specialist When Choosing Sleep Aids Like Pillows and Mattresses
When shopping for a bed, it’s worth relying on an expert. It's important to describe your current mattress and any observations related to your sleep. It's also recommended to show your typical sleeping position. This helps the specialist in selecting suitable sleep aids—particularly your mattress and pillow.
A Tempur Certified Sleep Ergonomics Specialist (CSES) can identify the possible causes of your symptoms through discussion and sleep posture analysis and guide you to personalized solutions.
